colr32
The experience of colour.

The Concept
colr32 is a creative tool/toy composed of thirty two colours, with each colour first dyed into cotton cheesecloth and then frozen within cast acrylic. The colours become their own moments in time, each piece its own entity that is also a part of a larger puzzle.
The pieces are intended to be an experience of colour that is similar to how one experiences colour naturally by allowing for light, shadow, layering, and inspiration.
The Process
A timeline of 8 months for this project allowed for ample research into materials and colour combinations. I created hundreds of samples, testing the effects of fibre reactive dyes on a variety of cellulose fabrics, woods, and grasses.
After testing the effects of casting different fabrics into acrylic, I decided to use cheesecloth as my colour catalyst.
I used HDU to create the array of shapes that would assemble back into a cube. I then used the HDU pieces to create vacuum formed molds for casting acrylic.
Each piece of this project underwent 5 grades of sanding and polishing to reach a satisfying level of shininess.
